Welcome to the 2017 OzSchools Chess Challenge
The Challenge Vision - to enable every child in Australia to have a go at Chess
We provide you with everything you need to run a Chess Tournament in your own school. These tournaments are massively popular because everyone in the school can take part and everyone wins prizes. The best players can then go through to the online MEGAFINAL and, skills permitting, to the NATIONAL TERAFINAL!
We suggest that your school tournament is played once a week in school (often during a lunch break or after-school). But if you prefer you can run it as a one-day event, perhaps doubling as an InterHouse activity - it is up to you. There is no travelling involved. Seven rounds are played, during which time children win badges, gold spots, mascots and other prizes. Rules of the tournament are so simple that it can be run by a teacher (or parent) with little knowledge of chess! All ages are welcome and qualifiers for the Megafinals are the top scorers in the tournament, plus leading girls and boys in age groups from under 7 up to under 15. Megafinals are held online on weekends and parents are responsible for arranging their children for these and later tournaments.
School registration fee for the tournament is $132, including GST and shipping of your Prize Pack, which provides enough prizes for up to 30 players (over 60 prizes, plus gold spots!). If you wish to enrol additional players, this can be done at a cost of $44 (including GST) for each additional 15 players (yes, just $2.67 per player!). Shortly after registration you will receive your Info & Prizes pack and you will be able to run your event straight away. Along with your pack of badges, gold spots and mascots, there are full rules and instructions for the tournament. Teachers find these tournaments stimulate interest in chess in their school, and many report large increases in the numbers of children in their clubs as a result.
